Cooperation and collaboration with the\nWorld Health Organization (WHO), governments, public health services, and epidemiologists is\nimperative in stemming the spread of COVID-19 itself. Like all agricultural\nagencies around the world, SSG\u2019s work has been disrupted by the COVID-19\npandemic, including a temporary ban on all international flights. Several of our target countries have experienced\nsteep increases in infections. Our\nthoughts and prayers are with these populations as they confront the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Concrete efforts must be geared towards\nmitigating COVID-19 from exacerbating already-high levels of poverty, hunger, and\nmalnutrition in these agriculture-dependent countries, which are home to over\n320 million people yet are left-behind in Africa\u2019s emerging agricultural\ntransformation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unlike farmers in nearly every other\ncountry in the world, farmers in the SSG\u2019s target counties lack access to\nhigh-yielding seed and other modern farming technologies which allow farmers to\nadequately feed themselves and produce surpluses to generate income.\nAgricultural systems in these target countries are already vulnerable and any\ndisruption to local production cycles is likely to result in acute food shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SSG calls upon partners to work together in\nbuilding sustainable and resilient agricultural systems that can weather crises\nprecipitated by climate change and other socio-economic challenges of our time\nto avert severe hunger and poverty.
